About Family Flamenco Classes

In Spain, in the Gypsy tradition, Flamenco is a family affair and everyone participates.
Because Federico and I often teach together and know how wonderful it can be when a couple and or family shares a similar interest/passion, we have created a format to help couples and families grow in Flamenco together, even if only one member dances. Guitarists and dancers alike, as well as “aficionados”, need to know and understand the compás (the rhythm with its accents). There are also roles in Flamenco for "just" doing the palmas (important hand clapping rhythm). If a student already plays some guitar he or she can learn the dance accompaniment in this class. A beginner might want to study privately until she/he can do chord changes, etc. However, beginners can get a lot out of the class learning the palmas and the compás, even if they don’t ever dance. This is the backbone of Flamenco.
In our 6:30 PM Wednesday class, we have had men who do both palmas and guitar and others who do some of the dancing and when it gets too hard he does the palmas. We have also had men who take the entire class too! We also had a husband and wife and their grown daughter as well as many single students. It certainly is not a requirement to come with a family member. We are just creating this opportunity for families to do this together since Flamenco can be so "addictive!" and fun! Palmas and rhythm are a major component of Flamenco. Each student, whether learning palmas or guitar in the group class pays the same price as the dance students, $60 for a 4 week session or a $20 drop-in fee per class. Private guitar instruction available by arrangement.
