El ORUCO

Raised with the grandchildren of the great maestro of Gyspy flamenco dance, "El Farruco", he absorbed the force and temperament that characterizes the baile of  the Farruco dynasty. He continued his training with the great bailaor Sevillano "El Torombo", with whom he now regularly shares the stage. Today he continues to study and perform with his mentor and childhood friend, Juan Manuel Fernndez Montoya, known familiarly to the world as "Farruquito".

JAVIER HEREDIA
He made his international debut touring as a soloist with Manuela Carrasco's company in 2004 and has since performed repeatedly in the Bienal de Sevilla, the Mont de Marsan Festival in France and other important Spanish flamenco festivals both as a soloist and in support of artists such as  Jose Merce, Arcangel, Manuel Molina, El Extremeno, and Juana la del Pipa.
Dear Marianne,

We're thrilled to announce that we've just added a surprise guest artist to the upcoming October, 2009 performances featuring the stellar flamenco ensemble ARTE y PUREZA.

CONCHA VARGAS, icon of Gypsy Flamenco Dance will be joining legendary Gypsy singer INES BACAN and brother JUAN BACAN!

Directly related to two of the main Gypsy flamenco families of Lebrija, the Pininis and the Peñas, Concha Vargas and Ines Bacan are cousins who were born in Lebrija and grew up in the heart of the Gypsy flamenco  community where everyday people would sing and dance flamenco at any opportunity, over household chores, at the cornCONCHA VARGAS & INES BACAN with ARTE Y PUREZAer bar, at a birthday, a wedding, even a wake.  Within their community, flamenco was a way of expressing feeling and emotion; a part of everyday family life in which everyone participated. They were seeped in their family's flamenco tradition from a very early age as the older members of her large clan passed on the secret of their art to the younger members of the family who in turn would add their own stamp and identity to the singing and dancing of their inherited cultural legacy.

On this their third US tour,  the Seville-based company Arte y Pureza led by guitarist ETHAN MARGOLIS brings us another unforgettable evening of sublimely spontaneous and deeply authentic flamenco of the traditional style rarely seen outside intimate gatherings in the Gypsy neighborhoods of Andalucia.

Arte y Pureza's  dancers include Farruquito protegè EL ORUCO in his Bay Area premier, lead dancer the fiery CITHLI OCAMPO and charismatic singer/dancer JAVIER HEREDIA, all younger-generation artists who have won high praise both in Spain and internationally.

We look forward to seeing you at the shows!

INES BACAN
One of the finest singers of cante gitano today. Her voice is enriched with the haunting echo of her aunt, la Fernanda de Utrera and with influences from her cousins Miguel Funi and Juan el Lebrijano. She began singing professionally under the wing of her brother, the renowned guitarist Pedro Bacan and is known for her interpretation of the ancient styles of her father Bastian Bacan. She excels in the Gypsy style of tientos-tangos and bulerias-romance demonstrating that the Lebrija style is one of the oldest and most original styles in the history of flamenco. She has toured all over Europe and Japan and is currently performing with Israel Galvan in his work "Tabula Rasa". She is joined on her October 2009 U.S. tour for the first time by brother JUAN BACAN, also deeply versed the family's traditions.

CONCHA VARGAS
Icon of Flamenco dance, her style is based in spontaneity, improvisation within a shared cultural legacy and the expression ofraw emotion. She has performed all over Europe, Japan and the US for over 25 years and has worked with such flamenco greats as dancers El Guito and Mario Maya, guitarist Pedro Bacan and singers La Macanita andLOS FARRUCO MARCH 6th Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco Curro Fernandez. In recent years she has been a featured guest artist with Antonio "El Pipa" and Company performing with them in both the US and Europe.
